Exciting places to visit in Rwanda this summer
Immerse yourself in the beauty of the African continent in Rwanda this quarter. Visiting Rwanda will be more than just fun. It will be a humbling learning experience as you encounter the rich culture, diverse cuisine, and the beauty that Rwanda has to offer. Ready to explore places to visit this summer? Here’s a list of 5 places you can’t miss.
Gorilla Trekking

How about turning your summer into a deep dive into nature? Not everyone wakes up randomly to meet a Gorilla in a park on their street; however, Rwanda offers you the rare experience of going on Gorilla Trekking. Blessed with these intimidating primates, the Volcano National Park of the Virunga Mountains is home to these mammals. While you need a guide and a permit fee of $1500 for this experience, sighting these gorillas in their natural habitat is an experience that would leave you with memories you’ll cherish for a long time.
Mystery Museum

Fine, that’s not what it’s called, actually, but how do you like an opportunity to visit a museum that tells the history, culture, and traditions of the Rwandan nation? This museum has a standing rule – no pictures. And that’s exactly what makes the Ethnographic Museum in Rwanda a hidden national treasure. Imagine being in a room where everything that represents the depth of the Rwandan heritage is housed. With a few Rwandan shillings, you gain access to this museum that tells you everything you need to know about the Rwandan people. What’s more? The fact that there are no pictures to give you an idea of what’s in there raises the anticipation and excitement to visit, to the roof.
Genocide Memorial

What’s a visit to Rwanda without visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial? At this site, you get to feel the effect of the 1994 Genocide firsthand. The site displays the Memorial Wall, where officials continue to add the names of those who lost their lives. The memorial holds the remains of over 250,000 victims of the 1994 genocide. Visiting the site stirs deep emotions as you see the wall covered with the names and photographs of victims, a lasting tribute that keeps their memory alive.
As part of the rehabilitation work in Rwanda, the memorial centre offers support to orphans and widows of victims of the genocide. It acts as an educational reminder of the painful effects of a genocide and why it should never be a repeated occurrence in any nation.
The centre also offers an opportunity for visitors to become supporting partners in the work every month. Visitors can come in every day from 8 am to 5 pm, except during the monthly Umuganda i.e., communal cleaning days, and Christmas and New Year festive celebrations. On visiting, you may also visit other smaller memorial sites such as the Camp Kigali Genocide Monument, Nyamata Genocide Memorial, amongst others.
Visit the Twin Lakes in Rwanda

If you choose to go on a gorilla trekking safari, don’t miss the chance to see the twin lakes of Burera & Ruhondo. Africa is one place where you get to see nature boast in its glory, and guess what? In Rwanda, you’re in for a burst of epiphany. Locked in between Muzanze and the Ugandan border is a landscape of rolling hills with two lakes sitting side by side, separated by about 1km of land.
This is a top spot to visit if you love to enjoy activities such as bird-watching, picnicking, communal tours and fishing. Here, you can learn how to fish from the lakes from the Rwandan locals, in the local way. You can also have a boat ride across the lakes for a closer feel of the water. You may choose to go on a boat cruise, a canoe ride, or both, depending on what you decide. A visit to the Twin Lakes will definitely leave you with enough memories to hold on to till your next visit to Rwanda.
Visit the Akagera National Park

If seeing the “Big 5” is something you’re looking to tick off your bucket list, Rwanda is the place to make it happen. The Akagera National Park in Rwanda is home to some of Africa’s exotic wildlife, and with a single day trip, you can go on a safari to explore the park. There are various Resorts in the National Park if you choose to stay a few days, for an even remarkable experience. Imagine sighting animals like Lions, Rhinos, Elephants, Leopards, and Buffalo, right in their natural habitat in the wild, instead of on a screen. Wouldn’t that make you feel so powerful?
Bonus Point: Explore Kigali!
Once you land in Rwanda, you’ll be right in the heart of Kigali, the Rwandan capital. Of course, there’s so much to explore here that it will leave you wishing for an even longer summer. Home to some of the finest restaurants, you’ll have no issues dining here, as this is one of Africa’s neatest cities.
