Offering a mix of culture, art, and fun, these annual festivals are definitely worth adding to your 2026 travel bucket list. It’s your perfect chance to explore new destinations without missing out on all the fun they have to offer.

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest is an international festival you don’t want to miss. Held from mid-September to early October, the two-week event pulls in visitors from all corners of the world. This grand beer festival originally started as a public celebration when Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria wed Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen back in 1810. Today, it features massive beer tents, traditional parades, mechanical rides, sideshows, and all the fun you can imagine.

During the festival, locals and tourists alike wear traditional costumes: the Lederhosen and the Dirndl. The Lederhosen for males consists of leather breeches with H-type suspenders that cross over the neck and back, while the Dirndl is an apron-like dress for females. An interesting detail is that the bow on the Dirndl indicates the wearer’s relationship status, depending on whether it is tied on the left or the right side.

Although it is called Oktoberfest, the festivities start in mid-September when the weather is much fairer. Visitors can reserve seats in the large beer tents for a small fee. This token grants access to food like roast chicken, grilled fish, and warm pretzels, alongside plenty of beer.

It is best to eat before you arrive. Additionally, carry only a small strap bag and enough cash to pay for your tent entry. Beyond the food, there is enough Bavarian-style entertainment to delight you even if you aren’t the drinking type. The atmosphere feels like one giant carnival spanning the whole of Munich, and you can’t afford to miss it. This festival is better experienced than told, so let Vecta Travels handle your travel plans today.

Notting Hill Carnival

Lauded as one of Europe’s biggest parties, this festival celebrates the spirit of Caribbean community and culture. It is an event that pulls in millions of people yearly and is marked by vibrant music, roasted jerk chicken, costumed parades, and pulsing street drums.

The outdoor carnival is celebrated annually in August. Claudia Jones, a Trinidadian human rights activist, organized an indoor event in 1959. She wanted to ease racial tensions among London’s West Indian communities. However, the modern street carnival evolved later. In 1966, social worker Rhaune Laslett organized a street event and invited Trinidadian musician Russell Henderson and his steel band. As they played along Portobello Road, Caribbean residents poured out of their homes, joined in, and the first Notting Hill Carnival was born.

Now, the festival is held on the UK’s August bank holiday weekend. Locals and visitors participate in band parades wearing feathered and sequined costumes, accompanied by music and food. With paraders moving in droves, you’ll have to decide what part of the action you want to join. While the parade is free to attend, you will need to pay to join an official procession or be part of an authorized group to participate in the costumed parades.

The Panorama steelpan competition often kicks off the celebration on Saturday. The high-energy, early-morning street festivities on Sunday then lead into the official opening ceremonies, parades, and family festivities.

The energy peaks on Monday with even more parades, live stage music, and after-parties.

Edinburgh Fringe Festival

This festival invites you to experience and appreciate global creativity in the form of live shows and comedic performances. Often called the largest arts festival in the world, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe began on the periphery of another festival designed for a selected elite. Eight theatre troupes staged their own shows to accommodate all classes of people, and the festival as we know it today was born. Currently, it features nearly 4,000 shows and over 50,000 performances annually.

If you’ve been looking for an excuse to get away from everyday life and immerse yourself in artistic performances and comedic entertainment, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is definitely worth traveling for. Typically, the festival lasts for over three weeks in August. You can access the official Festival Catalogue on the website to explore shows and book them ahead. While most require tickets, you will find most priced between £8 and £20, which can be purchased online or at the on-site box office.

Beyond the shows, you can be sure there will be plenty of good local and exotic dishes to grace your taste buds.
