Things to do on the Garden Route South Africa

  • Visit the ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn

Oudtshoorn is the world’s largest settlement for the rearing of Ostriches. Each farm has viewing space where guests are known to pay a token for watching these exotic birds while the daring of the lot gets to ride an ostrich. Oudtshoorn is surrounded by the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains which can be seen in the distance.

These Ostrich farms in Oudtshoorn gives educational tours of their farm discussing the nitty-gritty of operating an ostrich farm. These farms allow visitors to test the strength of an ostrich’s egg by standing on it, taking cool pictures with these ostriches. For the daring and adventurous they are offered the opportunity of riding on the Ostriches feeling the wind set sail behind. One farm that stands out is the Cango Wildlife Ranch because of the other experiences offered on the farm. Visitors are allowed to cage dive with crocodiles, walk amongst Lemurs, cheetahs and flying foxes. This farm has a dedicated Snake park where snakes from around the world are been breed alongside other wildlife on the farm.

  • Go on a Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour

The Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour is an indigenous rainforest on the Garden Route. This stretch of land is used as a zip lining haven where the steel cable is suspended over 25 metres above ground level. Here the guide is seen to take tourists through the wilderness giving them the history of the place, naming trees, plants and bird species. The forest canopy offers many a distraction and appeals to the ever adventurous tourist.

  • Hike through the garden route trail

Yes we know going through the Garden route by foot is not possible obviously but then there are nature trails along Robberg Nature Reserve. These trails offer views from the Coast where Dolphins, Whales, and seals can be seen going about their everyday living. Always research about these things before going to determine the grace of your endurance and maybe the fastest routes to take. IF you have extra to spare go for a guide by all means.

The two types of walk present in this area are the Gap walk and the Peninsula Walk. The Gap walk takes you left from the reserve’s information centre through the Fynbos down to the cliff straight to the Gap. After getting to the Gap you can decide to go further down to Die Eiland Beach to relax and engage in some people watching.

The half Peninsula Walk is estimated to be a two hours walk from the path leading to the rocky slope. This slope takes one to a dead end which needs to be navigated down the sandy gully to your right. On getting to the intersection between Die Eiland Beach and the Peninsula go towards the rock ensembles below Guanogat an overhanging cave. When going on the walk go with comfortable sneakers to protect your feet from the rigors of the walk.

  • Caving in the Cango Caves

Going through a little history the stalactites and stalagmites illuminated cave of Cango showcases so much beauty and ambience with multiple chambers to explore. Barely 30 kilometres north of Oudtshoorn town is the Cango Caves at the foot of the Great Swartberg. Markings and pictures along the roof and walls of the cave show presence of humans during the stone age. Cango cave was discovered by Van Zyl Hall in 1780 when the caves were dark and dreary. Presently the Cango caves are host to various concerts and musicals which accommodates close to one thousand people at once. Tourists are given the option of an adventure tour where they squeeze through narrow chambers, hear scary stories and swim in the lake.

When planning your visit ensure you book ahead to avoid cancellations or non-availability. Another noteworthy point is the check for the appropriate body weight which can pass through the never-ending slits.

  • Explore Towns like Wilderness along the Garden Route

The exciting thing about the Garden Route is the proximity of the towns to each other which makes it easy to be explored. Stopping at Wilderness a little town on the garden route very close to the coast. You can easily hike down to the beach, have some of their local tropical drinks and laze about in the sand. Another way is to go into the town check out their art & craft market to have an intelligent conversation with the artists.

Another sport to engage in is Canoeing through the Touw River. Along the bank of the river are spots perfect for picnicking and taking a swim. Here you can spend the whole of the day with fellow tourists making conversations and having a good time. While the calming effect of the flowing river washes over you.
